Livermore Landfill in Ontario, Canada, was closed in the mid-1980s and is now capped. Densely constructed and regularly monitored boreholes were installed at the landfill to access the subsurface and monitor the migration of radionuclides. Samples of soil and groundwater from 25 sites were obtained from boreholes located above and below the clay cap. Soil samples from the surface to 50 m below the cap were also collected to allow comparisons with groundwater samples. Samples of the crocidolite removed from the waste-rock were also collected to determine the age of the rock. The crocidolite contained in the rock was estimated to have migrated to the landfill in the 1950s and has remained there since that time. In some cases, the migration of radionuclides in soil was quantified. The estimated age of the crocidolite was 19,000 +/- 2000 years. The estimated flux of the radionuclides (from leaching to 15 m below the cap) was 1.3-1.8 microg d(-1) of radon, 250-300 microg d(-1) of uranium, and 1.6-2.0 microg d(-1) of thorium. For each radionuclide, the flux increased with distance from the cap. This migration is less than that of the radionuclides from the Peace River Repository in Canada, where the average flux in the top 10 cm of soil is 5 times greater than that in the Livermore landfill. This study demonstrates the potential for radionuclide migration from landfills.A former leader of a white supremacist group with connections to the Christchurch mosque shooting says he hopes the massacre makes him "famous." "After everything, I just hope I get to become a Christian martyr. I just hope I get to be famous enough to be killed because I'm a Christian now," said Jeff Joyce, who is serving 10 years in prison for running the hate group Atomwaffen Division (AWD). "That's really what I'm hoping for." Joyce's history of extremist activity comes to light a month before the May attack at Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, where 49 people were killed and dozens more were wounded. Its economy, being in the heart of Europe, and the fact that it represents a good chunk of the 27 members of the EU, means that the situation in Greece affects almost all of them in some way or other. All European countries, irrespective of whether or not they share borders with Greece, are affected by this situation. Greeks also take a lot of pride in their culture, which is the reason why they’ve given the country’s name to the European Union and the Euro. For Greece, this situation is almost catastrophic. Its GDP per capita is below the EU average. Although it’s hard to determine how much of this difference is due to the crisis, it is fair to say that the recession has, at the very least, reduced Greek GDP, since it is generally agreed that the crisis has impacted all economies that have suffered a recession. The situation is obviously even more dire for Greece’s economy, and for the average Greek citizen, since the country has received over 6 billion euros in direct assistance in the last few months. It’s also interesting to note that, since the start of the crisis, the amount of foreign aid that Greece has received has exceeded its foreign debt by a margin of 40%. The aid has been received to the detriment of the country’s national budget, which has had to make some hard cuts in order to face its financial situation. The crisis, if we’re honest, has had an impact on the EU in general, and the EU institutions have not responded well to it. One can argue that Greece is the catalyst of this situation, or that the crisis has been created by the EU, or that it has been caused by bad economic decisions, or even that it’s a result 4bc0debe42
